Carrot harvest 2015

Every year we grow a few carrots for the children, mostly because they love harvesting and eating them.

Our carrots never look all that great for some reason but I grow them anyhow.

Yeah, those are ugly. But they're organic!

I tried Herrick Kimball's 4-day Carrots in another bed and had an almost complete germination failure. I just don't have the touch. This bed was planted conventionally but it was in a sunnier area with better drainage.

These tasted great despite their ugly demeanor.

Maybe I'll do better this fall. I probably need to do more research on growing carrots in Florida.

Even ugly carrots will feed rabbits.

Same here. Nice big carrot top and tiny roots. They taste fantastic, though.

Hmmm. Sorry to hear of your 4-day-carrots failure. Perhaps it is the warmer weather in Florida?

There is an English chap on YouTube who is new to gardening and who has a four-day-carrots bed. He posts regularly with updates on the progress of his allotment efforts. The carrot bed doesn't look like it is doing all that well. I think in his case it is due to having a shaded garden area. Full sun really is a necessity.

The flavor really is excellent on these, so that's a win at least.

Good luck - if you have success, post!

I had some success growing Danvers carrots in large pots full of compost. In fact, the best carrots I got were in a 3' wide, 2' deep pot that I was using to grow a peach tree. Planted a ring of carrots around the outside and they all looked great. some were about 8" long and 2" wide.

Funny, though... the carrots I planted in nice deep hugelkultur beds with tons of compost ended up looking just like yours.

I have good success growing carrots in central/south Florida, but I plant them in November and harvest them when I see the diameter of the base of the plant looking about the size of dime. It takes longer than you might think--about 3-4 months. I grow mine in an irrigated raised bed that has mostly sandy soil with some compost mixed in. I did plant a successful second crop this year in January and harvested in April.

Okay - good info. Sounds like you're harvesting them small.

Perhaps it is the sun.

I would love to grow carrots. I actually had a good stand of them going by accident. I thought I had lost my seeds, but when I found them, they were in the bottom of a watering can that had gotten rainwater in it. Some had already started to sprout, but I decided that the worst that could happen was that I would fail, which is what typically happens anyway. Would you believe that I had tons of them pop up? I actually needed to thin them! Then, one afternoon, my husband said, "Come see, I weeded your garden!" It was either laugh or cry at that point. I chose to laugh.
