On the radio this morning - now with video!

I'll be talking gardening live on WOCA in Ocala this morning - catch me from 9-10AM on 96.3 or at 1370AM. It's a call-in show so feel free to dial in and ask questions.

I'll try to post more later. We're getting more photos of the Great South Florida Food Forest Project this week... but for now, I'm outta here!

WOCA has now posted their recording of today's show on YouTube:

The name of the show is "In the Garden" with Caron Ann Baldwin. She's a friend of mine who hosts this show every Tuesday morning - I just stepped in to give her a break.

For some reason we ended up talking a lot about edible animals rather than plants... for you bunny-lovers out there, I apologize.

Sorry to miss you (sigh-working) but question: Will attracting butterflies by planting flowers lend to MORE catterpillars eating precious fruit trees? I want flowers and butterflies but not caterpillars and worms.

I just posted the video of the show.

Good question. My reasoned guess: some butterflies - swallowtails, for instance - may come and feed on the nectar of the flowers, then later lay eggs on your citrus; however, adding more species of pollinator plants also attracts caterpillar predators. Also, many caterpillars are quite specific in what they eat. Moths/butterflies find their host plants via their excellent sense of smell. I'd wager that adding lots of flowers might confuse them more than if you had a host plant sitting all alone in the middle of a lawn.

We have a lot of pollinator plants in the food forest and have less trouble with caterpillars devouring our trees than we did before I planted the flowers. Just an non-scientific observation.

I watched and listened to the whole show. Very interesting and fun, and I don't even live in Florida. I see a a radio show in your future, David.

Thank you, Herrick. I used to be a radio producer... having my own program, rather than working on someone else's... hey, that'd be fun. Maybe I'll get an offer one day.
